… a squirrel is just a rat with a cuter outfit”. Not someone I’d ever be quoting but that is a quote from actress Sarah Jessica Parker of Sciurus (carolinensis) in the City fame.
Okay, that’s the quotes, and the puns over for tonight, honest. As mentioned before there are a number of grey squirrels that visit the feeders and I am often tolerant of them until they overstep the mark, which one of them did recently.
We have had a few new visitors to the feeders, one of which was a Goldfinch. To encourage this very pretty bird I put out a special feeder designed especially for them, filled with Niger seeds, something they are supposed to go crazy for.
Despite constantly filling up the feeders, putting seed on the floor, seed trays and log, one squirrel decided that since it could no longer dismantle the main feeders, that it would see what it could do with the goldfinch feeder, despite the seeds being far too small for it to gain any sustenance from. Having chewed a large hole in the plastic, the majority of the contents were spilled out over the grass and the culprit, having lost interest, turned it attention on the other seed freely available. Needless to say, this wanton vandalism (named after the eastern Germanic tribe who in 455ad overturned power in Rome and through their barbaric actions became know for their senseless destruction throughout Europe, even more so than the Vikings!) has cause (still with me reader?) the red mist to descend and whenever I can I’ve taken to chasing these despotic demons out of the garden.
Needless to say, such actions are worthless and spotting an easy meal these terrors keep returning. All I need now if for them to develop an evil laugh and my image of them will be complete. Bwaaa haaa haaa haaa.
